Info Talk on Raising and Training Future Service Dogs

Tehachapi, CA – Saturday, April 9th at 2 pm, Have a Heart Humane Society will host a talk by Debi Geary on raising and training puppies for Canine Companions for Independence and for Guide Dogs of America. The talk will be held at Rescued Treasures, Have A Heart’s resale store and adoption center at 1121 W. Valley Blvd. Ste. B in Tehachapi, next to Radio Shack at the corner of Valley Blvd. and Tucker Rd.

There is no fee for this presentation, however donation will be accepted.

Puppy Raisers from Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) and Guide Dogs of America (GDA) have teamed up in Tehachapi to raise and help train future service dogs.

Service dogs aren’t just born, they’re raised.

Volunteer Puppy Raisers raise the puppy for approx. 1 1/2 years before the puppy moves forward in its career to formal training.  The Puppy Raisers provide specially bred puppies a safe home, take them to obedience classes, teach them basic commands, serve up a healthy diet, provide socialization opportunities and give lots of love. It is the Puppy Raiser’s responsibility to take the puppy most everywhere and to expose it to as many different situations as possible (restaurants, crowded events, hotels, animals, children, even on airplane flights). A well socialized puppy will have fewer adjustments to make when it is turned in for formal training.

A little about the two organizations.

Canine Companions is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing, at no cost, highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Canine Companions trains four types of assistance dogs:

§ Service Teams – assist adults with physical disabilities by performing daily tasks.

§ Hearing Teams – alert the deaf and hard of hearing to important sounds.

§ Skilled Companion Teams – enhance independence for children and adults with physical, cognitive and developmental disabilities.

§ Facility Teams – work with a professional in a visitation, education or healthcare setting.

Guide Dogs of America is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is dedicated to its mission to provide guide dogs and instruction in their use, free of charge, to blind and visually impaired men and women from the United States and Canada so that they may continue to pursue their goals with increased mobility and independence.

Have a Heart is pleased to bring you this talk, the first of many talks that will be scheduled at the new facility.
